Heller Stacking Dinnerware? Score!

As I mentioned in my last post, we've been pretty busy since moving up to Atlanta last year, but finally, we made time for some estate sales!

The great thing about sales in Atlanta is that there are so many of them!  The downside, to anyone who's familiar with Atlanta, is the amount of time it takes to drive anywhere!  So, when scouring www.estatesales.net I find myself looking for sales that really speak to me, and are in close proximity to our home.  Two weekends ago, I found a sale that had a decent amount of Mid Century Modern goodies, and decided it was time to end the 'sabbatical'.

Not only did I make Josh get up early on that Saturday morning, but of course it was pouring, so we had to stand out in the rain for half an hour before the sale began.  Don't get me wrong, we had umbrellas, unlike some of the other dummies who arrived early, but it was cold and wet.

I had my eyes on some Heller Stacking Dinnerware and a few other retro pieces and Josh's were set on their incredible vinyl collection.  You can find records at every estate sale, but they're usually worthless.  The collection this homeowner had would have impressed the snobbiest audiophile.  Unfortunately, the prices were at minimum, retail, and at best, overpriced.  So Josh decided to pass on all those beautiful Ramones, David Bowie and Iggy Pop records...

On the other hand, I pretty much got want I wanted.  I snagged a few Heller Stacking Dinnerware pieces along with some other retro melamine dishes and a divided Dansk snack dish.  I hesitated on some mugs and plates, but I'm happy with what I got.

If you click on any of the photos below, a new window will open with the listing from our Etsy shop...

If you're not familiar with the Stacking Dinnerware produced by Heller in the 60's, just know this:  Massimo and Lella Vignelli - a husband and wife team - designed the award-winning products in a wide range of colors.  By utilizing industrial production and materials (a melamine resin), the plates and bowls were made to fit in neat secure stacks, maximizing storage and creating graphic, visually pleasing towers.

The Vignellis won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro Award for Good Design in 1964 for this collection and were later presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in 2003.

Massimo Vignelli's ethos was this, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything."  I couldn't agree with him more.
